Editorial Reviews

Here is a glittering collection fit for a king -- in this case, the undisputed, Once and Future King of Rock 'n' Roll. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the birth of Elvis Aaron Presley, Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight is the definitive retrospective, a remastered Hot 100 of Elvis classics in one beautifully-packaged four-CD boxed set.

Spanning the breadth of Presley's monumental, rags-to-riches career, Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight presents an artist who exploded in the mid-1950s, when he shook up a buttoned-down world with his mold-breaking music, not to mention his sideburns, swiveling hips, flamboyant wardrobe, and raw sexuality. Until his death at 42 in 1977, he would move from rockabilly, rhythm and blues, bluegrass, and rock 'n' roll to country, pop, gospel, and even to light operatic fare to become one of the greatest and most-beloved entertainers the world has ever known. He would also sell several hundred million records.

This definitive set has the chart-topping hits, numbers from his movies, deep cuts from various gold and platinum albums, and exciting in-concert performances. Featuring rare photographs and an incisive essay by respected music writer Billy Altman, ELVIS 75 repeatedly demonstrates that, to paraphrase one of his more famous album titles, 50,000,000 Elvis fans -- and counting -- can't be wrong.

Excellent Remastered Set for Fans and Collectors

Reviewed by Bill Anthony, 2010-03-19

Other reviewers have listed many details, and of-course all Elvis fans could argue about songs that should or shouldn't be here, but this box set, remastered by Vic Anesini, has the finest sound ever, and no overly-loud sound or tampering with mixes either. For the first time ever, the 1975 hit T-R-O-U-B-L-E has had the glitch in the opening piano chord fixed (it's always sounded like the tape was dragging or slow for a second on the starting note). The song selection gets sketchy in the 70's, with many "smaller" hits missing (as well as the top 10 The Wonder Of You being absent), but it is a great selection overall.

Vic Anesini (remastering) has also recently (2006-2010) mastered many excellent budget US reissues of original Elvis albums, some of which have never been on CD or are very rare. Check them out - some of them are: Elvis NOW, Good Times, From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Clambake, Viva Las Vegas, Seperate Ways, Burning Love and Hits From His Movies, Sings Hits From His Movies Volume 1, I Got Lucky, Girl Happy, and more. He may have also mastered some of the other recent reissues of Elvis' Camden albums, although he's not listed on the CD's (Almost In Love, Let's Be Friends, Sings Flaming Star, You'll Never Walk Alone). And, he remastered Elvis' 3 original Gospel Albums on individual CD's with bonus tracks in 2008 (His Hand In Mine, How Great Thou Art, He Touched Me). Also check out HIT-STORY, where Anesini fixed the mistakes on the first CD from it's original issue as "30 #1 Hits", and remastered all the tracks on the new 3rd disc.

Keep up the good work, and Sony/BMG - we want to see ALL of Elvis' original albums on CD - including all the soundtracks and compilations!

Perfect as a 100 track Elvis Collection!

Considering Elvis 75 in its entirety you are struck at the wide variance in musical genre it contains. 1950s Memphis rockabilly (Good Rockin' Tonight) mixes with glorious New Orleans style rock 'n' roll (King Creole) and the more pop orienated New York style rock `n' roll (A Big Hunk of Love); while Elvis in one moment delivers the pop sensibility of Stuck On You and in the next, hits his straps by wringing out the awful loneliness associated with the most painful of experiences with the anguish ridden bluesy soul of Stranger In My Own Home Town. He keeps us guessing through a mix of pleasant film tunes including the reflective cocktail lounge smoothness of I Need Someone To Lean On and a series of crowd pleasing powerhouse ballads such as the bombastic American Trilogy and the emotionally wringing Hurt.

Given this almost bewildering array of musical styles just who was Elvis the singer?

Listening to 'Elvis 75' it is obvious he was a singer of eclectic tastes and stirring ability; a musical interpreter par excellence. For long time fans it is no surprise as to how easily Elvis could circumnavigate an emotional range most other singers only dream about. As an artist Elvis traverses the searing heights and soulful depths music has to offer. Near the end his voice may have been erratic, but as Unchained Melody shows, he was always capable of producing something special. The passion never left him, it just became harder to extract as his mind and body sadly deteriorated.

In the Booklet, great visuals are complemented by an excellent essay by noted critic, Billy Altman. Altman's essay is insightful, incisive and not without clever narrative:

"While the prospects of a musical career seemed at best remote - the day after graduation, he began working at a machinist shop for the princely sum of thirty-three dollars a week - Elvis kept dreaming."

In around 30 pages of tightly constructed narrative, Altman provides a cogent examination of the Elvis story from its humble beginnings in that shotgun shack in Tupelo to its incredible highs and ultimate fate.

The 2009 audio ReMastering makes every song sound better than ever.
A GREAT compile at a fabulous price.

A collection fit for a King!

As a Elvis fanatic since the early 70's I have to say that this is the GREATEST Elvis collection I have ever seen. I already own the 50's, 60's and 70's masters Elvis box sets. But I guess I will buying another Elvis box set because if there ever was an ESSENTIAL Elvis collection that EVERY Elvis fan should have, THIS IS IT!

This collection is exactly the way an Elvis box set should be. Just the "Classic" material. Of course all of you reading this already know that Elvis had more classic material than anybody in the history of popular music.

Also stating the bleeding obvious, Elvis Aaron Presley was the GREATEST entertainer/performer who has ever lived. He had more impact on popular music than anybody who has ever lived.
